Elfin's 'wow' factor now in production

The Porsche-hunting prototypes by Melbourne sports car company Elfin that wowed crowds at the Holden stand at last year's Melbourne Motor Show - the Streamliner and Clubman - have made it to production.

The cars' swoopy lines were drawn by Michael Simcoe, the man responsible for the secret design of the Monaro and who is now the director of design, body frame and "integral architectures" for General Motors North America.

About four years ago Simcoe wanted a pure sports car and strolled into the Melbourne workshops of Elfin Sports Cars, where Bill Hemming and Nick Kovatch had resurrected the Elfin brand and were building modern versions of the Australian-made Elfin Clubman sports car of the 1960s. They took up Simcoe's offer for a fresh design.

The open-wheel Clubman car was the initial project but later it was decided to do a version with an all-enveloping body that revived another Elfin name - the Streamliner.

Rather than using the four-cylinder engine of the conventional Clubman, Simcoe thought big: using Holden's 5.7-litre V8 engine and its six-speed manual transmission.

Both models have gone through exhaustive development to make them ready for road use. They share a common "space frame" chassis - a framework of tubing on to which the engine and transmission, suspension and bodywork are mounted. The engine produces 245 kW, and with a weight of only 1100 kilograms, performance is outstanding.

Elfin has paid orders for 12 Streamliners and seven Clubman models (Simcoe's order is for a Clubman) and the first car off the line will go to five-times Australian sports sedan champion Bryan Thompson.

The Clubman is priced at $109,645 and the more lavishly equipped and styled Streamliner is $135,850.

Elfin Heritage

For over 40 powerful years, Garrie Cooper's Elfin Sports Car Company has produced some of the most highly competitive sports and open-wheeler racing cars of their day, ranging from the 1959 Streamliner, to Formula Vees through to 'big banger' sports cars and the MR9 Formula 5000 of the 1980's.

Elfin has won no less than 29 championships and major titles including two Australian Driver's Championships, five Australian Sports Car Championships, four Australian Tourist Trophies and three Formula Ford titles. World Formula One Champion James Hunt raced an Elfin, as did the brilliant French Formula One driver, Didier Pironi.

Elfin also took out the Singapore Grand Prix and twice won the Malaysian Grand Prix. The original Elfin Clubman was designed in 1961 and 14 vehicles were manufactured. For the new Millennium, enter the "New Generation" Elfin Clubman Type 3 and MS8 Clubman and Streamliner models.[/img]
