China's Nanjing Automotive buys collapsed British automaker MG Rover

LONDON -- Administrators for MG Rover Group Ltd. said Friday that the collapsed British automaker has been bought by Chinese carmaker Nanjing Automobile (Group) Corp.

The announcement ended months of speculation about the future of Rover, the country's last major automaker, but also raised questions about how much production Nanjing would retain in Britain -- and how many jobs would be involved.

PricewaterhouseCoopers, which took over administration of Rover when the automaker filed for bankruptcy in April, said Nanjing had bought the assets of both MG Rover Group and its engine-producing subsidiary, Powertrain Ltd.

The terms were not disclosed and PwC said it did not intend to announce any further details Friday. A person close to the deal, however, said Nanjing paid just over 50 million pounds ($87 million).

Nanjing had faced two competitors in its bid to buy Rover's assets -- an offer from China's state-owned Shanghai Automotive Industry Corp., which prompted the company's collapse earlier this year when it pulled out of talks about a merger, and one by British businessman David James to buy two parts of the company.

Tony Lomas, joint administrator at PwC, said in a statement that the "level and conditionality of SAIC's bid left Nanjing's bid as the preferred way forward."

Unions had supported the SAIC deal because they believed it was the most likely to restart substantial production at Rover's Longbridge plant in central England, which was forced to close with the loss of 6,000 jobs when the company collapsed.

"Having viewed both the Nanjing and SAIC bids, there is no doubt in our mind that on first viewing the SAIC proposals appeared to suggest more jobs for Britain," said Tony Woodley, general secretary of the Transport and General Workers Union. "It's disappointing, therefore, that the administrators have not seen fit to allow SAIC to complete its bidding process."

Woodley said the union will now seek talks with Nanjing to discuss jobs.

Lomas said Nanjing plans to begin hiring staff to implement its plan for the company, which includes relocating the engine plant and some of the car production to China, while retaining some production in Britain. It also plans to develop a research and development and technical facility here.

Rover had hoped the earlier deal with SAIC would generate cash to allow it to introduce new models and stem the falling sales of its current makes. The company, which turned out 40 percent of the cars bought in Britain in the 1960s, had not produced a new model since 1998 and held only a 3 percent share of the market at the time of its collapse.

The British government plowed millions of pounds in emergency loans into the company to keep it operating for a short time as its bankruptcy provided an embarrassing backdrop to the ruling Labour Party's election campaign, which was centered on the strength of the British economy.

PwC ended those loans and closed the factory when the prospects of a bidder for the entire group appeared to vanish.

Some intellectual property rights for Rover models were sold to SAIC in a 67 million pound deal last year, but the Chinese company does not hold the rights to produce the cars in Asia.

German car maker BMW AG has the rights to the Rover name, retaining them when it sold the company to Phoenix Venture Holdings for a token 10 pounds in 2000. BMW gave MG Rover permission to use the name indefinitely for free under a licensing agreement and said it would consider letting another company use the name. BMW sold the rights to the MG name to Phoenix in the same deal.

The directors of Phoenix have been criticized for paying themselves significant salaries and pensions as the company was falling into the red. The so-called "Phoenix Four" offered assets of up to 30 million pounds to assist Rover as it tried to resuscitate talks with SAIC in April, but acknowledged that the assets on offer were subject to attack from creditors.

Sj dost ne bodo mogl popravt k je tko lep , sam bo pa treba delat mal namnenju folka da ga prepričajo da morda pa le ni tok slab. Pa upam da ne bo kakšna rižota pršla vn :lol:

eh, dejte no... tak kot Rover, ma vsaka fabrika, ki je že obstajala pred ene 60. leti vsej pet modelov s tako ogromno masko!

In, ja, že pred več kot 60 leti so uporabili tako masko, kot bo na avtih čez približno5-7 let. Natančneje leta 1934.

In, ja, že pred več kot 60 leti so uporabili tako masko, kot bo na avtih čez približno5-7 let. Natančneje leta 1934.


:mrgreen: vem, Jerry vem... se bolj zajebavam. Audi z imenom Audi obstaja od 1910. prej je bil Horsh, pa so se gospod August Horsh nekej skregali in šli na svoje. ker niso smeli uporabit svojga priimka za novo fabriko, so ga prevedli v latinščino in dobili Audi.
žlehnaru sem predvsem zato, ker se take stvari pozablja in če negdo pokoplje po svoji zgodovini kako leto prej kot ostali, so vsi ostali avtomatsko proglašeni za plagiatorje! tudi Citroen je mel kup avtov s takimi maskami! najbolj znan je Traction Avant. tudi C6 je recimo mel tako. sam, če bi jo v duhu zgodovine namontirali na zdejšnjega C6, bi avtomatsko veljalo da kopirajo Audi (to že itak kao velja, pol bi pa sploh)!

in v obrambo žlehnarije...nekje okrog leta 1930 so se Horsh, Audi, DKW in še ena fabrika povezali v Auto Union (od tod štirje povezani krogi za logo tovarne), tak da Audija takega kot ga poznamo danes, poznamo šele od tam nekje 1965, ko je vse skupej pohopsal Volkswagen in določil Audi za znamko, ki bo nosila Auto Unionove štiri kroge... Audi je drugič rojen leta 1964-65, kar pa še ne znese 60 let :P ;) (se spet zajebavam, ne me resno vzet :-P )

No pravilno. Vsaj nekdo, ki ljubi Citroen, pa je vsaj objektivn do nemcev. Pa vidm da veš kaj govoriš in poznaš tudi zgodovino drugih znamk. Pohvalno.

Tista četrta znamka je bila Wanderer. Sicer se jim je še leta 65 pridružil NSU, vendar niso dodali petega kroga. (najbrž zaradi estetike znaka).

Njihova maska pa ne pride iz serijskega avta, pač pa iz dirkalnika. Vendar pa je bila tam malo drugačna, in takšna bo šele čez par let, ko bo maska doživela še vsaj dve evoluciji.

Ja točno uno. Type-C bolj natančno(in D). Na konceptu Pikes Peak se je že videl kaka bo, zdaj pa tut na predvidevanjih za Q5 gre v to smer. Spodaj ravna, ob straneh vzporedna, zgoraj pa zaokrožena. Dosti off-topica.

Mmm ja Rover. Večni angleški pacient. BMW ga je skot pumpal in futral najprej z markami, pol evri, ampak nč ni nucal. Ti Kitajci pa itak vemo kaj počnejo. :?
Sicer pa se ja ta njihova maska pojavila samo na V8 modelu Roverja 75, tko da ne vem. A je sploh bil v serijski proizvodnji?

nope... mislim, da ne! so skviknli glih tik pred tem... sam... je pa škoda! že zarad tega modela, ki ma tudi kr častno preteklost:

Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation, ki je odkupil pravico do izdelave nekaterih Roverjevih vozil, a mu je Ford speljal pravico do uporabe imena Rover, je objavil nov logo in novo ime tovarne: Roewe.

Logo je hud glede na Roverjevo poreklo, tak aristokratski. Ime je pa... Adisas varianta :lol:

tale 75 coupe je pa za pogledat, se ga ne bi sramoval.....

Kitajci pa.... upam, da bodo že enkrat zagnali proizvodnjo, malo imajo zdaj smolo z imenom Rover, sicer je nov logotip po obliki in uporabljenih barvah podoben staremu, ime pa... vse skupaj spominja na leva, ki so mu spremenili prvo črko: R=L.
Kakorkoli, Roewe nikoli ne bo to, kar je bil Rover, žal.
