Loeb Spain
Marcus Gronholm won three out of the four stages presented on the last day of competition, but it was not enough to overhaul the lead Sebastien Loeb and Dani Sordo created on the last stage on day one. Gronholm put an exclamation point on his performance over the weekend, winning the final stage by 4.4 seconds over his Citroen rivals. The finish earns him third overall and six points to his championship total.
Loeb and Sordo arrived at stage's end with the same time of 15 minutes and 44.3 seconds. Loeb takes first place overall on RallyRACC Catalunya-Costa Daurada making him the winnings driver ever for the round. Sordo fulfilled his obligation to Citroen perfectly with his second place, overall, finish. He allowed Loeb to earn the maximum points possible while placing himself ahead of Gronholm to cut down the maximum points the BP-Ford driver could take back to the championship.
Petter Solberg continued his impressive form finishing the stage fourth, 2.3 seconds behind the Citroen pair. Solberg's sixth overall has been one of his better results all season, and was well deserved when considering the pace of the Citroens and Fords. Mikko Hirvonen finished the stage an additional two seconds behind the Subaru driver, cementing his fourth overall position. Xavier Pons took sixth on the stage an additional 2.7 seconds behind Hirvonen, and 11.4 seconds behind Gronholm.
Jari-Matti Latvala finished eighth, 6.2 seconds adrift of Pons, but scored an impressive seventh overall for the rally. Francois Duval made the final stage a bit more interesting as he ran into a bit of trouble on the final long stage of the day. The OMV Kronos Citroen driver did heavy damage to the body work of his Xsara, but managed to save all the internal pieces of the car. The Belgian finished eighth, 19.1 seconds off the pace, but still secured fifth behind the BP-Ford and Citroen Total team.
