Here's the proof Jaguar isn't going to be caught napping in the luxury diesel saloon market, either. While the car's test driver was fast asleep in a lay-by near the firm's West Midlands base, one eagle-eyed Auto Express reader spotted the badge on the boot that revealed this is the oil-burning XJ.
The much-anticipated model - identified by the 'D' on the bootlid - should achieve at least 35mpg, thanks in part to its lightweight aluminium chassis. Powered by a modified version of the 204bhp 2.7-litre twin-turbo V6 from the S-Type, the XJ D will be no slouch. Fitted with the S's automatic gearbox and boasting around 435Nm of torque, expect the car to hit 0-60mph in less than eight seconds. Impressive mid-range acceleration and a top speed in excess of 140mph are also on the cards.
To boost the model's appeal, Jaguar is expected to extend its five-year/50,000-mile free servicing package - an offer which is currently scheduled to come to an end on all other XJ variants later this month. Expect the D to be priced at around £42,000 when sales start in late September. It will herald some mild styling and trim changes for the whole XJ range.
