Glede na evropsko Astro ni videti kakšnih razlik. Kaj v Ameriki ne bo imela 'klavier' laka?
The Saturn Astra represents a quantum leap forward for GM in the small car market. For a mere $100 million, which is chicken feed for a new product, the General traded in the uninspiring Ion for the European juggernaut Opel Astra. Many thought GM was merely buying time (literally) until a truly global Astra appears in 2010, since we've been told for years that it was too expensive to retro-fit a Euro-car for the US Market. Maximum Bob has turned that paradigm upside down, as he explained that the spared development costs have netted GM savings of about $900 million. Of course, GM would probably never shell out $1 billion for a small car with a volume of 45,000 units per year, but since the General makes products all over the globe, it makes sense to sell the best cars and trucks wherever it can.
When the re-badged Opel Astra finally hits U.S. shores as the Saturn Astra next month, General Motors will likely have an instant sales hit. However, the Astra can already be deemed a success for GM, even before the car rolls into Saturn showrooms. By using the current Opel Astra as a base, GM saved $900 million in the development of the Saturn Astra.
"Its adaptation to American requirements cost less than $100 million," GM vice chairman told Automotive News.
Lutz also indicated that Opel and Saturn will continue to share models. "In the future, Opel and Saturn will share about 90 percent of their model portfolios," he said.
The brands also share the Saturn Sky/Opel GT and the Saturn Vue/Opel Antara.
The Saturn Astra will be built along side the Opel Astra and GM's Antwerp, Belgium plant. The Detroit automaker expects to sell about 45,000 examples of the Saturn Astra annually.
