The Big Cat is taking another radical leap forward – and in an amazing exclusive, Auto Express has the pictures to prove it!

Following hot on the heels of the XF, Jaguar’s S-Type replacement, the British firm is set to reveal an even more dramatic model in the shape of this new flagship, the XJ.

The newcomer has one aim – to beat the Audi A8, BMW 7-Series and Mercedes S-Class at their own game. And with gorgeous looks, a fabulous driving experience and Jaguar’s first-ever hybrid powerplant, the new XJ is set to propel the marque back to the top of the luxury saloon class.

Under the skin, the saloon will use an updated version of the current car’s aluminium chassis. The wheelbase will remain virtually identical, so improvements in space will come from mounting the rear seats lower – to give better headroom – as well as the use of sculpted front seatbacks, which boost legroom.

Major updates will be made to the dashboard, with a facia modelled on the XF’s. That means it will feature touchscreen displays, motion-sensing controls and Jaguar’s new DriveSelect rotating gear selector, which rises from the transmission tunnel when the ignition key is turned. As with the uncluttered exterior, the cabin will be simple, with high-quality woods and leathers, and plenty of cool blue mood lighting.

Key to the XJ’s appeal will be the fact it debuts Jaguar’s hybrid technology. This uses super-capacitors – small, high-power batter-ies – to boost engine performance, and includes advanced stop-start technology to help reduce fuel consumption and emissions of the entry-level 3.0-litre V6.

Every powerplant will be revised, though, with a flagship R model being fitted with a new 500bhp 5.0-litre supercharged V8, while the 3.0 V6 petrol features a supercharger, too. The capacity of the current model’s twin-turbo V6 diesel is also set to increase from 2.7 litres to 3.0 litres.

All engines are mated to Jaguar’s latest six-speed automatic box, complete with steering wheel-mounted paddles. The XJ will also have a new damping system similar to Audi’s Magnetic Ride. This can react quickly to changes in road surface, and works with a stiffer body, wider track and revised suspension to give the Big Cat class-leading ride and handling.

The XJ is the latest example of Jag-uar’s product renaissance, and takes its styling cues from the XF. Now that car is finished – sales of the saloon kick off in March next year – the XJ is the brand’s most pressing project.

The current generation arrived in 2001, and although it’s still great to drive, improvements are needed to its engine range, cabin packaging and interior design. As you can see from our images, the XJ is facing a bright future. It draws on the C-XF concept, which was described by Jaguar as “a precursor to cars that will become recognised for their groundbreaking exteriors”, and the model is clearly the next step for the firm.

It has been designed under the guidance of Ian Callum – the man who penned the XK and the XF – and the flagship will get a recessed grille with striking twin-lamp LED headlights.

The bonnet is marked out by a central power bulge, but the most distinctive styling cue is the low roofline which, combined with minimal glass areas and a radical coupé-like profile, results in a long, low and menacing look. The production version will also get a panoramic glass roof. It’s widely known that Callum is a fan of the original Jaguar Mark X of the Sixties – and the new XJ takes inspiration from that classic model.

Expect to see a concept version of the XJ towards the end of next year, with sales starting in mid-2009.

No sooner has Jaguar launched the XF than it’s readying its next new car: the XJ limo. CAR Online has grabbed the first spyshots of this engineering mule, caught as it ventured out near the company’s Whitley R&D base. The widened tracks and cooling tests at the front indicate this is the new XJ, codenamed X351.

It’s scheduled for launch in 2009/10 and will build on the daring (for Jaguar) design direction pioneered on the XF. That car has split opinion like few others in Jag’s history, so expect some fireworks in the gentlemen’s clubs of London and the Home Counties.

Jag’s rakish new saloon might ruffle a few feathers, but it’s not all change for the big cat. It will keep the aluminium construction of today’s car to trim weight, but gain a much edgier design. When we interviewed design director Ian Callum at the recent XF launch, he suggested that the Mercedes CLS was an inspiration to the style of modern large saloons. Expect a hint of the Mercedes’ slammed look and shallow windowline, but paired with Jag’s new squarer grille and hi-tech lights (possibly LEDs on this iteration).

Bold inside and out

Inside, the XJ will echo the look of the XF’s cabin – which can only be a good thing. The fresh and modern interior of the XF is one of its ace cards; it strikes a fine balance between classical comfort (leather, fine woods, quality craftsmanship) and modernity (pop-up rotary gearchange, disappearing ‘eyelid’ air vents, proximity switches that don’t even need to be touched).

Clearly these snatched pictures don’t tell us too much about the new XJ. Manufacturers use such chassis mules, created from hacked-about current models, to test the engineering set-up on new cars. Only much nearer launch will we see more advanced prototypes in more or less production form.

But X351 will use the existing chassis from the XJ, explaining the cut-n-shut nature of this mule. There’s little wrong with the way the XJ drives – like the XF it’s saddled with yesteryear looks, not engineering – so there won’t be too much change under the skin.

Key details are an aluminium structure, a straight six and Jag’s new 5.0-litre V8, which is also slotting into numerous large Land Rovers and Range Rovers. The XJ will remain rear wheel drive and the excellent 2.7-litre TDVi V6 diesel will continue too. Unsurprisingly, it’s the best seller in many markets.

Kaj pa vem... muca je muca...si predstavljaš da slečeš bejbo in te pričaka štirioglata :twisted:

Nikakor mi ne potegne ta design kot je na zgornjih slikah (XF-stil) in upam da so samo slabi shopi. Široka, nizka, dolga, elegantna...taka bi morala bit..

Na spodnji sliki je dolga, široka in elegantna. Dvomim da bo tisto prvo! Konec koncev je oblika avta že nekako tradicionalna in jo zagotovo ne bodo drastično spreminjali.
XJ - za ljudi s stilom (in denarjem) :-P

Ja receno je, da bo XJ prevzel veliko oblikovnih lastnosti XFa in bo za inspiracijo imel MB CLSa.

Jaguar's engineers are continuing to put some early 2011 XJ test mules through the paces, with a new round of spy photos showing cold weather testing near the Artic Circle. It's important to note these "mules" do not reflect the future exterior of the XJ, but rather feature the old model's body on top of the new car's chassis.


Rather than developing a whole new chassis, however, Jaguar decided to re-use the XJ's advanced all-aluminum platform. After all, the current XJ's slow sales are not due to mechanical shortcomings, but rather its controversial exterior.

Codenamed X351, the next-generation XJ is also said to be inspired by the Aston Martin Rapide or Mercedes-Benz CLS as Jag's head of design, Ian Callum, has often praised the CLS' styling. The mule's wide track indicates that the XJ is taking on a more low-slung look.

The first mules for the new XF appeared in October 2005, and the car was officially unveiled less than two years later. With that in mind, expect to see the new XJ officially unveiled by the end of 2010 — a figure confirmed by insiders. Look for the Jaguar XJ to be launched as a 2011 model. If we're lucky, we might see a an XJ (C-XJ?) concept car in the next year.

Design boss Ian Callum has stated the XJ's new look will be considerably more daring than that of the new XF, since it's a lower volume model.

se vidi pozitivna sprememba na sprednjem delu vozila ko pa je zadnji del ostal nekako "isti", lep avtič bo tole

Mores gledat da to ni niti priblizno koncni dizajn. Zgledal bo cisto drugacno za inspiracijo so mu Jaguar XF, MB CLS, Aston Martin Rapid...Tu je samo karoserija zdejsnjega XJa nalimana na novo šasijo.

Sredinski tunel z menjalnikom je iz XF 100% drugega pa dokler ne bo uradno težko rečemo.
Če lahko bereš tole si preblizu! Drži varnostno razdaljo!

U u, nov Mad Max film :D Sam glede na malenkost vidne luči spredi bo precej podobn XF-u I think - sploh glede na že prikazan koncept :)

Uf zadej zelo lep, klasičen, britanski :) Spredaj mi pa neki ne štima, ne vem - te luči ga nardijo preveč fordovskega za moje pojme, sploh se mi pa zdijo bistveno preveč prot blatnikom pomaknjene - mejbi je sam slab PS ;) Bomo vidli, kako bo, ko bojo uradne fotke zuni :)

C stebričk je že drugačn k na tistih auto expressovih fotkah, pa mislm d zadne luči tut. Drgač pa komi čakam d ga pokažejo ceuga, ker tale teaser več al mn sam obliko haube pa tist skriti c stebričk pokaže.
