Patrick Le Quement, Renault chief designer, said for a Slovenian business daily paper initial proposal of a new Twingo had been a badly planned project. The designer team got not enough information (from marketing & engineers) what kind of car to make. The director's board was evenly split between two different strategies:1.) make a true Twingo successor - attracting only the current Twingo customers; 2.) make a different Twingo attracting broader customer base globally. A proposed car was a poor compromise - having poor chances for sales success. Therefore the project was stopped.
The new car / project was design completely from scratch, not just in the front as previuosly reported. There were also severe technical changes. The size is almost the same as the initially proposed car. The new Twingo will come to markets in early 2007. The production will be cheaper and more profitable.
Le Quement said all the CGIs and photoshops in the internet and automotive press are wrong, not showing the new car design correctly. He also said the public will never seen the initial design proposal. That could harm the new Twingo's success.
