MotorAuthority je napisal/-a: Volkswagen shifts Golf into high gear with 7-speed DSG
Posted on Thursday 20 December 2007
Modern automotive technology is getting so advanced, and the timeline for development so short that an item exclusive to the sacred province of the upper echelon of motorsport a few years ago can be found in economical hatchbacks today - quite literally. Volkswagen’s seven-speed Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG) transmission is just such a technology. Offering the best of both manual and automatic standard transmissions, the DSG dual-clutch transmission is now available in the VW Golf and Golf Plus with seven speeds.
For those not intimately familiar with VW’s DSG technology, the basic concept is relatively simple to grasp. Imagine a manual transmission, but instead of one gearset there are two - one for the even gears, another for the odds - and each has its own clutch. That clutch is computer controlled, as is the gear selection, so that while you are in second gear and accelerating, the computer has preselected third on the other gear shaft and only has to disengage the clutch from the active shaft and engage the clutch on the inactive shaft to change gears, allowing a seamless transmission of power between gears. It works in reverse for downshifts, with the computer handling the rev-matching as well. In the modern DSG, the two gear shafts are not side-by-side, but concentric, one outside the other. This allows for smaller packaging. If that doesn’t help much, check out this video of the DSG in action.
The newest seven-speed gearbox (pictured below) going into the Golf and Golf Plus has two new features as well. In addition to being the first front-transverse installed seven-speed DSG, it is also the first to run dry clutches rather than immersing the clutches in oil. By running a dry system the newest DSG achieves even greater efficiency and can handle more torque - up to 250Nm (185ft-lb). The increased efficiency results in 0.7L/100km better fuel efficiency than its predecessor, the six-speed DSG (pictured above) when paired with the 1.9L diesel motor. To help drivers get a start in hilly areas, all DSG-equipped Golf variants also come standard with hill-start assist, which holds the brake temporarily while the driver switches to the accelerator to prevent the vehicle rolling back as it would with a manual.
Initially the unit will be available on Golf and Golf Plus models with either the 90kW (120hp) 1.4L TSI petrol motor or the 77kW (103hp) 1.9L TDI motor. The optional installation of the new gearbox will start at €1,750.

Tovarna sploh ne daje ven 200+ konjskega dizla brez quattra.
Audi Invests E10.6 Billion Till 2012
Pursuing plans to catch arch-rivals BMW and Mercedes-Benz, Audi reported that the scheduled budget for the period from 2008 to 2012 is EUR 10.6 billion in fixed investments. That means Audi’s annual cash flow in new models and production will reach a steady level of around two billion euros. Previously, for the last planning period, from 2007 to 2011, the planned investments were fixed at up to EUR 9.8 billion. As part of that investment, EUR 7.9 billion has been allotted to new models alone.
The resources will be used to expand the range of models from the current 25 to 40 by 2015. In 2008 Audi is scheduled to introduce several new models into the market such as the Audi A3 Cabriolet, the Audi A4 Avant and the Audi Q5.
The rest of the investment will be utilized for Audi's production sites. In 2008 plants in Ingolstadt and Neckarsulm are to receive around EUR 1.2 billion - EUR 720 million to Ingolstadt, and EUR 400 million going to Neckarsulm.
Wow thats more than ford makes in 10 years.
Although we have yet to reach the midpoint of the well known leaked Audi roll out schedule 2012 document, so far it's been right on target. And now, this latest leaked information sent to us from Audiblog.nl lists the upcoming engine/model schedule with the production start and market launch dates. Audiblog.nl tells us the information came from an Audi Poland spreadsheet document and it is from a reliable source, however, we have not confirmed the authenticity of the information. So, take it or leave it - this information is for your enjoyment. Compared to the 2012 roll out schedule linked above, there are a few surprises.
Audi A1
In addition to the current 1.4 TFSI engines, the A1 will also receive a new 63kW (86hp) entry level 1.2-liter TFSI which is most likely based on the 70hp 1.2-liter engine that was recently shown in the new SEAT Ibiza at the Madrid Motor Show last week.
Audi S4 (B8)
The sports version of the current generation A4 will see the 4.2-liter V8 from the B7 generation get dropped, and instead, return to its B5 roots with the all new 245kW (333hp) 3.0-liter V6 bi-turbo TFSI. Available in Avant form as well as sedan, the S4 will be available in 6-speed manual transmission or double-clutch 7-speed S-tronic.
Audi S5
The Audi S5 coupe will keep its 4.2-liter V8 for now, but starting in September 2010 the bi-turbo 3.0-liter TFSI V6 as seen in the S4 will replace it. Despite the horsepower reduction from the V8's 260kW (354hp) versus the V6's 245kW (333hp), it's possible the weight savings as well as lower center of gravity of the smaller engine compensates for the reduction in output.
Audi RS5
We've already seen the RS5 acknowledged in the 2012 roll out schedule, but this document gives us a bit more. Using the same 4.2-liter V8 in the current S5, the RS5 gets a massive 70kW (96hp) bump from 260kW (354hp) to 331kW (450hp). Such an increase suggests some turbo charging shenanigans are going on, as previously speculated, however, only the 7-speed dual-clutch S-tronic transmission will be available. The RS5 hits market in July 2010.
Audi A5/S5 Sportback
The A5 Sportback will be available with 1.8 TFSI to the 3.2FSI for the petrol and 2.0 TDI to the 3.0 TDI for diesels plus all of their variants in between. However, completely unmentioned by the 2012 roll out schedule, is an S5 Sportback which receives the new 3.0-liter bi-turbo TFSI in either 6-speed manual or S-tronic7. September 2010 is the launch date.
Audi A7 Sportback
We have heard of the all new A7 model in coupe and cabriolet form, but this leaked document brings to our eyes for the first time the A7 Sportback. With only petrol and diesel V6 engines available from June 2010, a new 8 speed automatic transmission will be introduced on the 3.0-liter TDI model which launches in November 2010.
Audi S7 Sportback
Here's the blockbuster. The S7 Sportback breaks cover in November 2010, but it does not receive the 3.0-liter bi-turbo TFSI engine found in the future S4 and S5 models. Instead this baby gets an all new 4.0-liter TFSI producing 290 kW (394hp) with S-tronic7.
Audi A8 (D4)
The next generation A8 hits the market six months earlier than stated by the 2012 roll out schedule. Same V8 engines are retained and new 8 speed automatic transmission is added.
Audi R8 Spyder
Hoping for a debut at this past Detroit Auto Show, the R8 Targa or Spyder was absent. Instead we saw the R8 V12 TDI Concept debut. However, according to this leaked document the 5.2-liter V10, which was recently spotted with it's engine in view, will be available in both Coupe and Spyder variants making 386 kW (525hp). The R8 coupe launches in June 2009 and the Spyder in March 2010, both with the R-tronic sequential gearbox.
