Kia announced on Monday that a version of its Koup Concept will be headed to production in 2009. The Koup Concept was first revealed at the 2008 New York Auto Show and is intended to help Kia capture a bigger piece of the Gen Y pie.
The Koup will replace the Kia Spectra, although it remains unclear what nameplate the production car will actually wear. A sedan version of the Koup will be launched in mid-2009, followed by a coupe version a few months later. The production Koup will be the Korean automaker’s first foray into the coupe segment.
Although the Koup is intended to replace the Spectra, Kia has no plans to offer a hatchback version. “We believe the coupe will sell better than the hatchback,” Lee Hyun-soon, president of Hyundai-Kia Motors’ r&d division, told Automotive News.
The Spectra has been Kia’s best-seller through May, tallying 35,826 sales.
The Koup Concept was powered by a 290 horsepower twin-turbo 2.0L four-cylinder engine, but Kia has yet to announce what powerplant will motivate the road-going version.
