Motor Trend names Mercedes-Benz GL-Class SUV of the Year


Motor Trend has gone and named the 2007 Mercedes-Benz GL450 its SUV of the Year. We apologize if you were waiting with baited breath for the December issue of MT to arrive because you like to find these things out for yourself, but if that's the case then we can't help you. The GL450 beat out 22 other SUVs including such contenders as the new Acura RDX and MDX, four variants of General Motors' GMT900 platform (Escalade, Tahoe, Suburban and Yukon Denali XL), the Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigator, as well as Ford's own version of the Hail Mary Pass, the new Edge. The GL450 was no doubt aided by its ability to repel side impact barriers, set slalom cones on fire, and swallow an entire home's worth of furniture (how do the Germans engineer this stuff?), all of which you can check out the GL450 doing in this "controversial" commercial.

Forget for a minute who won Motor Trend's SUV of the Year award and let's examine the 22 contenders (follow the jump for a complete list). MT editor Angus Mackenzie admits himself that only three out of the 22, the Mercedes-Benz GL, Jeep Wrangler and Toyota FJ Cruiser, have any real off-road capability. In fact, the vast majority are really crossovers, or CUVs, built on unibody frames like a car and meant for fair weather excursions where the road is always on an even keel. It's appropriate that the MT editors picked an actual SUV as this year's winner, as next year we might be reporting on Motor Trend's CUV of the Year.

Nekaj novih podatkov o 2008 razredu C.

Expect official unveiling at Geneva 2007 with sales starting shortly after. Also expect the etstate version to arrive 6 months later in the autumn. Our sources state a coupe is also planned which we can only interpret as being the new C-class Sportcoupé which is also based on the same platform.

Although it will share more of its components than before with the larger E-Class, the next C will be much sharper to drive and more distinctive as a range in its own right: Mercedes-Benz is to position it as a true small sports saloon, rather than simply a smaller answer to the E. Air suspension or active body control have been ruled out due to cost restraints. Base engine will be a direct injection 4-cylinder 1.8-litre with varying horsepower from 150 to 190. Horsepower for the 2.5- and 3.5-litre V6 will be 210 to 270 respectively. AMG's 5.4-litre will be revised with new horsepower rating up from today's 360 to 400-410bhp to compete with the Audi RS4 and future BMW M3. Also a 3.0-litre diesel is planned as well as the new iDrive-like operating concept found in the new S-Class. 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system will also remain available as well.

Nekaj me zanima, pri BMWju se tako obšajo na Bangla kot oblikovalca, kdo je pa ta skrivnostna oseba pri Mercedesu, ker njihovi modeli so z vsako generacijo lepši, kapo dol.

Pred dnevi sem videl notranjost od novega modela E, ki bo na trgu leta 2008. B prototip mora biti narejen do julija 2007 in tako mnogo podjeta že zelo hitijo z vsemi pripravami.

Zdaj pa me nekaj zanima, če je še kak znalec na tem forumu. Je možno, da bo novi E imel avtomatski menjalnik brez prestavne ročice?

Pre-production of the next generation Mercedes C-Class is under way in Daimler-Chrysler’s Bremen plant. The sedan is the first to be released at the 2007 Geneva Motor Show. Then the station wagon will follow about half a year later in fall 2007. Altogether it will be a completely new model range offering standard RWD and AWD as an option. Code-named W 204, the C Class will be available in four different styles, as sedan, station wagon, sports coupe and convertible. Power will come again from a variety of four- and newly developed six- cylinder engines. A sporty AMG version is in the pipeline, too. These latest photos are showing a red sedan prototype with only a few strips of black camouflage tape removed by image editing.

Ex-DaimlerChrysler manger charged

Ex-0DaimlerChrysler AG manager has been charged with breach of trust for allegedly cheating the carmaker out of euro40 million ($A67.35 million).

Prosecutors said Thursday they charged a former DaimlerChrysler AG manager with breach of trust and falsifying documents for allegedly cheating the carmaker out of euro40 million ($A67.35 million).

The 41-year-old, who has been in investigative custody for a year, is accused of filing fake invoices between 2000 and 2005 for computer services that were never delivered, state prosecutors in Stuttgart said.

Three other people are accused as accessories for submitting the false invoices on the instructions of the former manager, who worked at the German-US car maker's finance department.

Prosecutor Bettina Fetter said investigators had seized euro20 million ($A33.68 million) from the manager.

Ursula Mertzig-Stein, a spokeswoman for DaimlerChrysler at its Stuttgart headquarters, said the company wanted its money back.

It was unclear when the manager, whose name was not released, will go on trial.

The case is one of several exposing murky dealings by DaimlerChrysler employees.

On November 13, the company announced that the head of its bus unit, Wolfgang Diez, had resigned after an internal investigation discovered "irregularities" at the division. Several executives have also been suspended.

Meanwhile, the US Securities and Exchange Commission and Department of Justice are investigating whether the firm violated US anti-bribery laws.

DaimlerChrysler has said it found evidence of "improper payments" in Africa, Asia and Eastern Europe. Several employees have been dismissed or suspended in consequence of those investigations.
