Audi is also developing flagship Q7, with V12 diesel

LOS ANGELES — Audi brags that it is "introducing a new vehicle segment" with the unveiling of the Audi Cross Cabriolet Quattro at the 2007 Los Angeles Auto Show. Whatever it may be — Audi says it is the spawn of a convertible and an SUV — it's not the production Q5 that was expected to make its entrance here.
The Audi Q5, the smaller sibling to the Audi Q7, will roll out at "an international auto show" in the "first half of 2008," according to Audi spokesman Christian Bokich. In the meantime, Bokich says the Cross Cabriolet Quattro "hints of what the Q5 will look like, but it will not be the production car."
The Audi concept, a two-door four-seater, is awash in a show-stopping "Copper Sunset" exterior paint job underscored by 21-inch wheels. Design cues include no B-pillar and a fabric hood that stows behind the rear seats in 17 seconds. The glass rear window is hinged to the fabric hood. The Audi Cross Cabriolet Quattro is equipped with a longitudinally mounted six-cylinder 3.0-liter TDI that churns out 240 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque. It is linked to an eight-speed automatic transmission. The concept sprints from zero to 62 mph in 7.2 seconds. Audi says "its average fuel consumption is a mere 7.3 liters of diesel per 100 km [32.2 mpg]."
Audi says its engineers used "a simple trick" to exploit "the extra body height of an SUV. The Cross Cabriolet has a double underbody that turns the open profile of a convertible body into a closed structure, producing a major increase in stiffness," said the company in a statement. The concept also features electric ride height adjustment, which varies ground clearance by up to 1.6 inches at the touch of a button.
The concept hints at new technology directions for Audi. The Cross Cabriolet Quattro's navigation system is linked to Google Earth software. "By connecting to the Internet, it will also be possible in [the] future for traffic and weather information or even data on air quality to be included and taken into account in planning your route," said Audi. Entering address data by hand is obsolete with the concept; the driver clicks on an image in the Google Earth interface to get directions. Audi has completely overcome its former aversion to cupholders, too. The concept provides each passenger with a heating and cooling cupholder.
Other details include an intercom so passengers can talk easily even with the top down, and a Bang & Olufsen sound system that analyzes noise inside the vehicle and makes adjustments.
