Its Sportback Concept unveiled at the Melbourne motor show injects some sex appeal into the car-maker's near future.
Hot, isn’t it? Well, pay attention because the concept you’re looking at is the future of Mitsubishi design.
Mitsubishi’s local (and international) woes have been well documented, and the best way to fire up the imaginations of potential customers and instil confidence in the brand’s future is to create a serious injection of sex.
Enter the Mitsubishi Sportback concept. Starring for the Adelaide manufacturer at this year’s show, the undeniably sexy lines and aggressive stance of the Sportback continually grabbed and held the attention of punters and industry types, all soaking up every graceful curve.
Although hard engineering details were scarce, the slinky sheetmetal sits on the new-generation Lancer (which goes on sale around July of this year) platform, and should join (in slightly toned-down production form) the permanent model line-up some time in the following six months.
Sportback styling cues, such as the prominent inverted grille and sharply-chiselled lines, will form the kind of core design DNA you can expect to see on future Mitsu models.
Designed by Mitsubishi’s European design chief, Omar Halilhodzic, and his Frankfurt-based team, some voices cited more than a passing resemblance to Alfa Romeo’s Brera coupe, particularly in the sharply-cut tail-lights and sloping rump.
Whatever the inspiration, the thought of a high-performance, sharply-honed, all-wheel-drive Evo model wrapped in this body, gives much more than just hope for Mitsubishi’s future…
