China Auto Industry Built on Technology Transfer

The auto sector is one of the few in which the Chinese government still twists arms to get foreigners to enter joint-venture relationships with the state. And yet, the state companies are not all hindered in their relationships. They can, for instance, enter into multiple joint ventures with multiple foreign firms. On top of that, the Chinese government has decreed that in joint-venture arrangements, all intellectual property brought to the arrangement by one of the partners is owned equally by the other partners. For Western and Japanese companies with vast stores of proprietary technology, the law is a bad deal. It gives their Chinese partners the right to distribute that technology outside the firm to whomever they please. That puts the Chinese companies in the unique position of having the ability to combine top technology from several partners into their own vehicles.
China's unmistakable long-term goal is to rank among the world's leading car-producing economies, and free access to technology is one quick ticket there. "It can cost an American or Japanese automaker between $1 billion and $2 billion to develop a new car," notes Oded Shenkar, Ford Motor Company Chair in Global Business Management at Ohio State's Fisher College of Business. The loose passing of intellectual property in the automotive sector, Shenkar argues, equates to an enormous state subsidy. Detroit might have to sell hundreds of thousands of cars to earn back its development costs on a particular model, but Chinese manufacturers that simply expropriate the models can earn back their money almost immediately. "Also," he says, "if you knock off another company's model, there is no way the original manufacturer can beat you on price." The Chinese knockoffs also do not have to pay for advertising, since the models they ape are usually heavily promoted.
"There's one more savings," Shenkar adds. "If you're an imitator, you only have to imitate the successful models. The Chinese tend to borrow only from the tried-and-true cars."
The realities of technology transfer in China also help the domestic car companies as know-how passes from advanced foreign companies to needy domestic ones through back channels. Volkswagen found its own proprietary parts built into a domestic rival's new cars. At Shanghai's big auto show in 2003, GM was shocked to find that a $9,000 small family van it was just unveiling had an exact double, priced at $6,000, at a Chinese manufacturer's booth down the same row. The cheaper vehicle was produced by a company called Chery Automobile Co., which was owned in part by GM's big Chinese joint-venture partner, Shanghai Auto. Perhaps to Shanghai Auto's credit, it reportedly quickly divested itself of its interest in Chery.
For its part, the Chinese government ruled as it usually does in cases where Chinese companies are liberally influenced by their foreign competitors: It decided that GM had no evidence for its case.

Vendar ljudje, kopiranje obstaja tudi v Evropi, trenutno najbolj očitno prav v veleopevani Južni Nemčiji. Najprej so hoteli bavarskega Banglea vsi linčati, zdaj ga kopira celo nonplusultra Mercedez... Ne moreš verjeti... Meni gre močno na smeh...

drugmirko je napisal/-a:hja glej Joie.... zdj bom sicer lupnu na pamet, ker glih ne vem kak je prišlo do tega avtomobila in na koncu koncev celega kitajskega avto buma nasploh (babel fish je pri prevajanju kitajščine rahlo smešen program, ker mi je recimo Nissanov Zaroot SUV prevedel kot End of Day SUV in kake resne informacije na ta način pač ne moreš dobit. lahko pa lažje klikaš po linkih in se pri tem hudo zabavaš :P ).
vendar... lahko pa zelo površno sklepam! kitajci so se očitno odločli, da so avtomobili tisto s čimer se da debelo mlatit denar in so verjetno po partijskem dekretu odredili kup tovarn, ki so mele kakršno koli zvezo z metalurgijo, traktorji, tanki, vojaškimi kamioni al pa bicilki, da bodo delali avtomobile. ker so svetovne fabrike lačne tržišča, so seveda z veseljem sprejele sodelovanje v upanju prodaje in velikih zaslužkov na 1,3 miljarde velikem tržišču. pol je pa prišu nov partijski dekret, da morajo kitajske fabrike delat kitajske avte s kerimi bodo zaslužle veliko dolarjev. in zdej maš problem! avto naredit iz nič ni glih enostavno, če si prej delal traktorje al pa bicikle. ampak dekret je dekret in tu ni kej... sej se verjetno spomneš, kak so v pedesetih al šestdesetih prišli na idejo, da bo kitajska postala največja proizvajalka jekla na svetu, pol so pa vsi kitajci pustili delo na poljih in fabrikah in šli v najbližji gozd sekat drevje in v glinastih pečeh na dvoriščih talit vse, do zadnjega lonca in zadnje žlice v zadnji vasi na kitajskem, da bi ispolnili zadano nalogo... rezultat je bil gaziljon ton popolnoma neuporabnega jekla, popolno ekološko opustošenje pol države, propadle letine na poljih, masovna lakota ki je pobila par milijonov ljudi in nič plehnatega v celi državi (se ne zajebavam, res so to nardili )
zdej... če nimaš pojma kak se dela avto, je seveda najlažje vzet enega že narjenega in se ga lotit z žagico in betičkom! poglej si tisti plavi ET od lani... od sprednje šipe naprej je praktično enak MB A razredu. tudi zadnja, prtljažna vrata so verjetno enaka, sej so enaka še na letošnjem konceptu. verjetno je tudi notranjost... sedeži, večina armature... enaka kot v MB Aju. predvsem si pa poglej sliko na steni za njim. tam je še očitneje videt kaj je bla osnova. na letošnejm modelu so spremembe že večje. praktično so enaka ostala samo še zadnja vrata in mehanika. verjetno bo tretji model v naslednjem letu videt že čisto in neprepoznavno drugačen avto kot je MB A razred. na ta način se pač učijo. ni se ti treba ukvarjat z razvojem strukture iz nič ampak preprosto pogledaš, kak je kej narejeno in kaj lahko narediš drugače. in pri taki vrsti "dedukcije" ali "revers engeneeringa" se z obliko luči in vrat prtljažnika pač ne ukvarjaš. lahko bi sicer dali gor kej iz kakšnega kamiona ampak, to je v tej fazi še nepotrebna in nebistvena komplikacija. ko bodo skužli princip, se bodo lotli tudi tega. verjetno zato vseskupej na tem avtu... vrata, okna, armatura, volan...zgleda malo preveliko, nerodno in pod napačnim kotom... ker to v tem trenutku ni pomembno, sej se učiš kaj in kako sploh lahko delaš! se pač učijo v teku... in kot je videt pri ostalih kitajskih proizvajalcih, se učijo grozljivo hitro!
ps. tale pamfelt je sicer čista insinuacija, ampak mislim, da sta bistvo in poanta nekje blizu resnice.
in vsekakor ne trdim, da so kitajci kupli MBjeve rezervne dele in limali na pleh al pa preprosto ukradli en Mercedesov A razred in juhu po njem...ne! verjetno delajo z Mercedesom. pravim samo, da je ET koncept preprosto narejen iz Mercedesovega A razreda... tako, kot je tista Volgina Pobeda narejena iz Mercedesa S600.
