What's Bad
Silly things go wrong, such as flywheel sensor cable connector failure which immobilises the car. Stalling at junctions and at low revs, and 500 RPM drops at moderate road speeds might be due to a high resistance earth on the engine block and can be cured by cutting back
the wire of the earthing lead, soldering a new connecter and re-securing to engine block. 8-valve 1.4s and 1.6s a bit underpowered. 'Classic' saloon not the best looking car in the World. Engine has to come out to replace the clutch. Several Telegraph readers reported needing a replacement engine around 8,000 miles. 1.6 8-valve engine prone to head gasket failure. Heater matrixes may also fail and cost £350 to replace if the car does not have a/c or £600 if it does. Automatics give trouble (front drive clutch drum splits). One report of digital odometer failure requiring a new instrument cluster, but Renault paid most of the cost even though the car was two years old. Report of a/c bracket failing due to corrosion causing unit to puncture radiator matrix leaving owner with a £900 bill. Sharp edge of engine soundproofing cover of diesel can cut through fuel pump wiring loom. Replacement available from Renault dealers. On manuals, the circlip, retaining the bevelgear/tripod joint housing for the near side driveshaft can come out of its groove and the car loses all drive. Easily fixed if identified.
In June 2001 Renault was rated by Motor Warranty Direct as Britain's joint 4th worst out of 22 marques for used car warranty claims. 20th from bottom for reliabilty in Auto Express 2002 reader survey of 100 models. Fifth bottom in 2002 Which reliability survey of cars up to 2 years old; 184 cars surveyed. Renault had above average warranty repair costs in 2003 Warranty Direct Reliability index (index 114.24 v/s lowest 31.93). Link:-

What to Watch Out For
Kerbing damage, strange electrical faults. To check for head gasket failure on 1.6 8v look under oil cap for 'mayonnaise'. (Low-mileage cars had head gaskets replaced FOC under a Renault 'Tech Note'.) A 'fishy' smell inside the car and damp under the carpets is usually a symptom of heater matrix failure.
Recalls
1997 (Megane and Scenic July-Sept '97 build): 7,434 cars found to have potentially defective braking system. 2000: July 1998 buld only: driveshaft CV may fail and affect steering. 12/1/2000: 4,422 F9Q diesel engined cars built Dec '98 to May '99: brake vacuum pump may leak allowing oil to enter the brake servo resulting in loss of servo assistance to the brakes. Magnetti Marelli brake vacuum pumps to be replaced; servos to be inspected for oil ingress and replaced if necessary. 14/12/2001: 3,586 Meganes and Scenics fitted with F9Q 732/740 engines and dCi engines recall because of risk of diesel return pipe rubbing against the alternator leading to risk of leakage from high pressure pipes. Reposition/replace chafing pipes and check unions for correct tightness. 15/2/02: Non a/c Meganes and Scenics with K4J or K4M engines with a catalytic converter fitted may have a hard brake pedal and lack of brake assist caused by deterioration of brake assist pipe because it passes too close to the heat generated by the cat. September 2002: All 1.9 diesels built 1997-2000 with gold colour alternator pulleys recalled because pulley can fail and cause the timing belt itself to fail or jump a few teeth.
