Five millionth Peugeot Hdi motor - March 4, 2004
In February, PSA Peugeot Citroën produced its five millionth HDi (high-pressure direct injection) diesel engine for Peugeot and Citroën built-up vehicles. Volume production began in September 1998 at Trémery in eastern France, when HDi engines were initially manufactured for the Xantia and the 406. Today, every vehicle in the UK Peugeot and Citroën car ranges offers an HDi option.
At the same time, production has increased from 100 engines a day at launch to nearly 8,000 a day. 53 percent of new Peugeot and Citroën passenger cars registered in Europe in 2003 were diesel-powered. To the end of January 2004, the number of HDi engines equipped with particulate filters and fitted on built-up Group vehicles totalled 617,000 units, almost 13% of total production. By 2005, this figure is expected to rise to one million. 53 percent of new Peugeot and Citroën passenger cars registered in Europe in 2003 were diesel-powered. The Group manufactured 18 percent of all new diesel-powered passenger cars in Western Europe in 2003 (compared with 12.4 percent of new petrol-fuelled passenger cars). In the UK, diesel took 27.3 percent of new passenger car registrations in 2003, compared to 23.5 percent in 2002. This year that has raced ahead further, reaching 31.2 percent in January, and total diesel registrations for 2004 are expected to account for over 30 percent of the market.
