Console Strengths

First the Good
One of the very nice things about a console is that with few exceptions, the hardware base is static. This means that for the buyer, once you buy it, you don't have to spend a lot more money upgrading it with more powerful processors or updated video components. You can purchase add-ons every now and then, but a wholesale change of core technological components is not going to be something you have to worry about.

From a developers point of view, it seems that there is also a lot less to worry about. You can choose, right from the start, to optimize your game for a single level of performance, one that is common to the console being developed for. If you have a certain amount of processing, video and audio power you can count on, you don't have to spend time dumbing-down your vision to accommodate those who have not upgraded in years. Because of this, you can also take advantage of numerous hardware and software tricks to gain even more performance, and you'll never need to worry about having it break on 30% of the consoles out there.

Large Market
You have a built-in market right from the start. If there are 5 million units of that particular console already out there, you theoretically have 5 million potential customers who should have the same type of gaming experience. It should run just as fast and just as well on the first system sold two years ago as it will on the most recent system sold just last week. You have more "known quantities". You know how fast the disk load time is, what options are available for the controller and what your maximum resolution is going to be. In fact, most modern consoles all use the same base resolution, because that is what most existing TV's can handle. Less questions, less hassles, less bug testing It's a win-win situation!

That huge audience is also much less ambiguous for a console developer. Sure there are over 2.5 trillion PCs out in the world, but how many are capable of playing your game? What percentage of those owners are even interested in gaming? With a console, you know that every sale equals an interested game shopper, and in this sense current console gamers outnumber PC gamers by many times. Sales and profits show this as well.

Another strength of consoles is cost. At $300 or less, they have historically been a far easier purchase to make than a personal computer. Even now, when PC prices are at an all time low, you will still need to fork out some $600 for a cheap PC and 15" monitor. Personally, I can see the appeal of having that extra $300 to play with. You can buy more games, extra controllers or a whole lot of nachos and Pepsi to keep you going during late-night game fests. In addition to costing less, the units are usually smaller, simpler and easier to connect. They are also more 'family friendly', as you can sit on the couch with your family and friends and gawk at your modest 27" television screen while blasting away at each other. Not a bad setup when you think about it.

PC Strengths

The Good PC - Part One
The early days of PC gaming were certainly not nearly as inspiring an effort as one would hope. We saw a variety of pathetic early entries, but as the troops conducted more and more exercises, they became more finely tuned and more capable. They were able to weed out the incompetents and develop talent in those areas that best suited their strengths.

Thanks to the keyboard, the PC has been able to handle much more complex titles than any console has. Flight simulators and flight games have been able to take advantage of the PC keyboard to help control planes with more accuracy and precision. In fact, simulations in general benefit from the keyboard. The old Wing Commander series used an awful lot of keys, but so did the old Mech Warrior series. In the days where you could only have a simple joystick with a few buttons, the keyboard was paramount to getting the most from your titles.

Some games even came with keyboard templates to help make it all easier. You could activate shields, adjust yaw and pitch, change your acceleration, flip on your sensors and select weapons all with a single keypress. In many games you could even customize the keyboard to fit your specific style and preferences. The keyboard has always been one of the strongest points of PC gaming and I find it still invaluable for many modern games.

Long Live the Mouse
Another thing the PC has going for it is the default pointing device. I have always been a huge, huge fan of trackballs, but I also love the mouse. For many, modern gaming in first person shooters would not be nearly as good without a mouse or trackball. New optical devices are more accurate than every before, and when you are flying along at 100 frames per second on a high resolution screen, reaction time is everything.

The speed and accuracy of modern USB mice is incredible, and a good device can literally mean the difference between winning and losing. Today's games are all mouse-aware, allowing configuration of not only the 2 primary buttons, but also the scroll wheel and any additional shoulder buttons. First person gaming without the mouse would be more of a pain than it is worth. I just can't imagine playing them any other way.

More Stengths

The Good PC - Part Two
The little bit on the mouse brings us to another strength of the PC. Thanks to improvements in Windows Direct X, we can now have a ton of active buttons on multiple controllers doing all kinds of amazing things. We have a vast choice of killer controllers, from ACT Labs driving wheels and Light Guns to the ever-so-flexible Logitech Wingman Rumblepad. Thanks to some great software, we can program these controllers just about any way we want to. When I first got my first Gravis Xterminator gamepad some time back, I spent hours and hours programming profiles for each and every game out there.

While there are even more advanced and user-friendly profile programming applications out there now, there may not be as much of a need for them. Even with the default button mapping in Windows, I can usually just hop right into a game and starting playing without changing any of the controls. The defaults are often pretty darn good and I find less of need to alter the configuration then I used to.

On top of that, there are more killer joysticks, pads and other controllers out there than we have seen in some time. In addition, innovative products from manufacturers like Gravis and Thrustmaster have helped to push the button frenzy to new limits. One thing you can count on: If you can't find the control you want on the PC, you are about as hard to please as they come.

Frag'em in High Res
The final big thing I dig about the PC is that I can play games in high resolutions. The games look crisp and clear with full 32 bit color at resolutions like 1024x768 to 1600x1200. Heavy Gear II rocks at high resolution, and shooters like Quake 3 Arena and Unreal Tournament are a blast at 1600x1200x32 bit. The difference is being able to see crisp detail even when you're not zoomed in with a sniper rifle. Even games like Virtual Pool 3 look good at high resolutions! Driving games like Re-Volt & Roll Cage Stage II look better than ever, and RPG's are so much better in 800x600 than 640x480 it is not even funny. High resolution displays let you see more on screen with more clarity than ever before, and that is something about the PC that you just have to be jazzed about.

When looked at in its entirety, you can really learn to appreciate just how far PC gaming has progressed. You have high resolution games with flexible control configurations and a whole lot of other perks, such as popular multi-player gaming online or over a network and the ability to save games so that you don't have to keep replaying levels over and over to advance. You have companies with massive man-years of experience in programming for the PC and the ability to create and release games without the help of a license or publisher. You also have the ability with many titles to install them on your massive hard drive and play them at will, with no need to keep on swapping disks or re-initializing the system. All things considered, the PC rocks as a gaming platform in ways that consoles never will.

Toliko o objektivnosti prilepljenega besedila.

Ej ti govor karkol hočeš, PS je za PC-jem v grafiki, to kar jaz govorim že cel čas, kar bo čez 1 let al pa dve me ne zanima, ker bo itak PC spet v prednosti...All things considered, the PC rocks as a gaming platform in ways that consoles never will. hahaha konec debate z moje strani. 8)

4. majo že ADSL podporo, mrežne povezave in vse podobno
