Hyundai gre v F1

Hyundai to enter F1 in 2010

When the inaugural Korean Grand Prix begins in 2010, natives may have a local team to get behind. Hyundai has announced their plans to enter the world of Formula One in the 2010 season.

Hyundai, who originally planned to purchase an existing team, may forgo that option and partner with electronics maker Samsung to finance the team. Talks are currently underway between the automaker and Bernie Ecclestone to secure a place on the grid.

The news is partnered with rumors that Hyundai may re-enter the world of rallying, and that, coupled with the technological developments inherit with F1, should make the automaker a more viable player on the world stage.

Menjave pri Ferrariju

Menjave pri Ferrariju

Changing Direction: management changes at Ferrari

Only a few days after the end of the 2006 season, reports are surfacing indicating that there's going to be a real shake-up in the management at Ferrari, primarily at the "Scuderia" F1 racing division, but also affecting the road car division as well.

It's been long expected that Technical Director Ross Brawn would retire with Michael Schumacher. It was Schumi that brought him in to direct the team, and insiders expect him to announce his retirement or "sabbatical" later this week. Nigel Stepney has been serving as race & test director, but with Brawn's departure, he could be considered for the promotion. Although Stepney didn't positively confirm that Brawn is leaving, he did indicate that some senior management are, and that the vacancies are likely to be filled from within "the family". Another candidate for the technical director post is Ross Brawn's protégé Luca Baldisseri, Schumacher's race engineer.

Meanwhile, team principal Jean Todt is expected to move away from directly managing the race team. Todt was promoted to Ferrari chief Luca di Montezemolo's position when Luca was promoted to chairman of the Fiat group, but Jean has been holding on to both posts in the interim, supervising both road and race divisions. (Some have suggested that Todt could eventually replace Max Mosley as head of the FIA.) Sporting Director Stefano Domenicali is tipped to succeed Todt as team principal, with Industrial Director Mario Almondo moving up to sporting director.

Together with the arrival of Kimi Raikkonen to take Michael Schumacher's seat as the champ retires, these management shifts amount to big changes at Ferrari. For the Scuderia, that could mean an adjustment period of another year before the team can seriously contend for the championship. Time will tell.

Passing in the Corner: F1 and Soccer cross paths

As two of the world's most popular and action-packed sports, F1 racing and soccer ("football" to just about everyone outside North America) share more in common than you'd think. This past season, the F1 race calendar was adjusted to avoid conflicting with the World Cup. No wonder, as grands prix are consistently second only to the World Cup (and the Olympics) for global television ratings.

Nearly all of the F1 drivers are avid football players, and routinely play friendly matches against each other. In a recent article in F1 Racing magazine, most of the drivers seemed to agree that Giancarlo Fisichella was the best player among them (though Schumacher and Alonso came close). Schumacher himself plays for FC Echichens, a third division Swiss team, whose coach (ironically named Patrick Ferrari) is hoping Michael will spend more of his new-found free time with the team. In the past, Schumi's demanding schedule had meant he'd leave in the middle of games to get to the track. And it was none other than soccer legend Pele who was on hand to present the retiring champ with a parting trophy at last Sunday's season-closing Brazilian Grand Prix.

Most of these intersections between soccer and grand prix racing are ad-hoc, but the Real Madrid football club is making it official. The team is going to sponsor an F1 car for the 2007 Spanish Grand Prix, and Williams appear the likeliest candidate, not least because, as an independent team, Williams.F1 wouldn't pose a problem for Audi, Real Madrid's sponsor.

NASCAR racing and American Football are undoubtedly the more popular forms of the two sports in the United States, and aside from the occasional special edition Ford truck, the two don't often cross paths. But everywhere else in the world, F1 racing and soccer are the be-all-and-end-all of sports. The FIA World Championship and the FIFA World Cup, it seems, share more than similar names, they share common fans with a common passion.

Gre za to, da se je vodilnim možem pri RM zazdelo, da bi bila ideja o velikem logotipu kluba, ki se vozi po stezi v Barceloni, zelo smešna in bi pokazali kdo je "glavni". ;)

Grand Prix: some hope for Imola, less for London

Posted Oct 30th 2006 8:41AM by Noah Joseph
The San Marino Grand Prix at Imola may be off the F1 calendar for next year, but that doesn't mean it won't make a comeback. The race organizers are fighting to keep the race, but F1 head-honcho Bernie Ecclestone is adamant that the race won't be on the schedule for the next season. If they make the necessary modifications and upgrades (under new organizers), however, Bernie says there'd be nothing to stop them from putting in a new bid for future seasons. Alternatively, the single Italian Grand Prix could end up alternating circuits every other year, as the German Grand Prix has arranged to alternate between Hockenheim and the Nurburgring since its second race (the European Grand Prix) was canceled.

At the other end of the continent, the prospects for a grand prix in London aren't looking so hot. The British Grand Prix has been held at Silverstone since the start of the F1 championship in 1950 (with few interruptions), and is currently contracted to keep the race through 2009. In 2004, a parade of F1 cars proceeded through the streets of London, drawing half a million spectators and lending support to the idea of a race in the city itself. Initially, London Mayor Ken Livingstone expressed support for the idea, but never shying away from controversy (or from putting his foot in his own mouth), "Red Ken" backtracked at a recent press conference, claiming the city wouldn't support the expense of hosting a grand prix, and that he'd be afraid to walk the streets if they did.

Never a dull moment with the constantly-shifting landscape of the F1 race calendar.

Ferrari management update: Schumacher, Todt and the whole family

Posted Oct 29th 2006 7:42PM by Noah Joseph
Piece by piece, Ferrari has been confirming the reports and ending the speculation with several announcements about the future of some of their key personnel and the positions they hold in the Scuderia family.

The most recent news came today with the announcement that now-retired driving legend Michael Schumacher would stay on as a "special assistant" to the new CEO of the Ferrari empire (more on that below). Since joining Ferrari, Schumacher has been more than a driver, he was the center of the team, having completely rejuvenated the historic squad from a losing relic into the dominant force in racing. What does the job of "special assistant" entail? Hard to say at this point, as Schumacher looks forward to sitting back and reflecting on life before taking on any substantial new tasks. But don't expect to see him trackside at the races and test sessions, or sitting behind a desk at Maranello, either. He'll likely become more of a consultant to the company, enjoying the quiet life he's so richly deserves while contemplating what he can do for the team with which he's celebrated so many victories.

The new CEO he'll be advising is Jean Todt, who moves up from general manager to focus more broadly on the company as a whole (or so he hopes). When outgoing CEO Luca di Montezemolo became chairman of parent company Fiat, Todt was put in charge of Ferrari as general manager but stayed directly involved in the racing team as well.

That leaves two positions open at Todt becomes CEO: general manager and team principal. Amedeo Felisa moves up from deputy managing director to general manager, following Todt up the hierarchy as his right-hand man. Ross Brawn will be leaving for a year's sabbatical, vacating his post as technical director of the team. It seems Todt will be managing the Scuderia for one more season, fuelling the speculation that when Brawn returns, the job will be his (and maybe then Todt will have a bit more room to breathe). Taking Brawn's job as technical director is Mario Almondo, who for over ten years served as industrial director. Other promotions include Paolo Martinelli, who moved up to a new job at Fiat, and Gilles Simon who takes Paolo's job as head of the engine department.

All these changes and more amount to the biggest shake-up Ferrari has felt in years, and we'll be watching to see the effects brought to bear on its legendary racing activities and delectable road cars.

AP
...
Following the announcement, Schumacher walked out onto the track at Monza — where he recorded five of his 90 Formula One victories — to bid farewell to the thousands of fans who had gathered to see him.

" Seven days to create the world. Seven titles to create a myth ," read one banner.

Nissan v F1 ?

Nissan to join F1 in 2008?

Posted Oct 31st 2006 1:50PM by Noah Joseph
Rumors are again mounting with suggestions that Nissan is considering entering Formula One with its own team. Rival Japanese automakers Honda and Toyota both have teams, and Korean competitor Hyundai recently announced their intentions to join in on the action as well. With the contemporary trend of automakers supporting full teams – as opposed to simply providing engines as was the practice in the past – Nissan is likely considering its own team and not just an engine contract with an existing one.

Of course Nissan's sister company Renault have a team of their own – a world champion team, actually. But while this shows the company's appreciation for F1, it's practically unheard of for an automaker to run two full competing teams. Other squads (Ferrari serving as the most prominent example) commonly supply engines to smaller teams, but Red Bull is the only company that runs two full teams.

One possible scenario would be for the Renault team to simply switch banners to Nissan. Given that the Renault F1 team has little to do with the French automaker, the move would be primarily a change of image, if CEO Carlos Ghosn sees fit.

A second possibility is being fueled by reports of Nissan talking with retired driver and former team owner Alain Prost, which would likely see Nissan buying out an existing team for the Frenchman to run.

The Nissan team is tipped to be hitting the grid as early as 2008, a full two years before Hyundai's and a mere two seasons away. If both Nissan and Renault were to both run teams, we wouldn't be surprised if Nissan served as the "farm team" for Renault, possibly using their engines re-badged as Nissans while providing them with extra testing data and some back-field support.

What to get the man who has... an island: Michael Schumacher's custom Harley retirement gift

Posted Oct 31st 2006 11:50AM by John Neff
The crown prince of Dubai has already pledged to give ex-F1 racer Michael Schumacher his own man-made island called "The World", so what other man-made gift can top that as a retirement present? The Ferrari Clienti, a group of folks who buy and race classic and late model Ferrari competition cars, doesn't count any crown princes among its members, but it did manage to scrape up enough coin to commission for Schumacher his very own custom built Harley Davidson. The appropriately colored motor bike was given to Schumacher at a Clienti event at Monza and will join the 7-time World Champion's bike collection that spans multiple continents and already includes a few Harleys. We're not very well versed in two-wheel culture, so lacking any concrete info we can't tell you much more about the bike, though any readers who can shed more light on the custom creation are welcome to in the comments.
