Volkswagen has enlisted the services of two former World Rally Champions in its bid to win the Dakar Rally. Carlos Sainz and Ari Vatanen will each drive a Race Touareg 2 on the gruelling desert marathon that takes place from 3 to 21 January.

As part of their preparations, Sainz and Vatanen have been testing in the deserts of Tunisia and are now heading for Abu Dhabi for the UAE Desert Challenge that runs from 5 to 10 November. It's the final round of the 2006 FIA Cross Country Rally Championship and is regarded as the traditional pre-Dakar warm-up.

The Race Touareg 2 cars, which made their debut on the 2006 Dakar, look similar to standard Touareg SUVs but are built around a tough steel chassis and roll cage. The bodywork is made from carbonfibre, while the suspension is purpose-designed to cope with the pounding it takes on rough desert surfaces.

The engine is closer to the production model's five-cylinder turbodiesel, but the race car's engine has 231bhp compared to the standard car's 172. It's also a 2.3-litre version rather than the road car's 2.5 litres to comply with rally regulations. Four-wheel drive is common to both road and race cars, but the racer has a six-speed sequential gearbox.

VW samo bivše reliste angažira za svoje tuarege na dakarju. To se meni zdi da ni nujno dobro... Drgače pa je mitsubishi n1.

V vednost - Vatanen je dostikrat dirkal in zmagoval (npr s Peugeotom) na Dakkarju, še dosti prej v raliju (njegov sovoznik je bil celo Jean Todt). Kasneje je (tudi zahvaljujoč tako pridobljeni popularnosti) postal celo član europarlamenta. Tudi Sainz je že bil na Dakkarju.... Tudi Kleinschmidtovo in ostale so angažirali predvsem zaradi izkušenj, tako da VW očitno izbira za Dakkar predvsem voznike z bogatimi tovrstnimi izkušnjami (in ne neke hitre reli dirkače), kar je tudi conditio sine qua non za kakršnekoli uspehe na takih preizkušnjah. Ni VW kriv, če so le-te sorodne relijem in zelo zanimive reli voznikom ter se tako baza formira predvsem od tam.

Res, da je Jean Todt svojo športno kariero začel kot sovoznik rally dirkačem, ampak AFAIK Jean Todt nikoli ni bil sovoznik Vatanenu...v 80-tih za časa Group B, ko je Vatanen dirkal za Peugeot, je bil Todt že športni direktor ekipe Peugeot! ;)

Na dirki Pariz - Dakar pa je Vatanen zmagal že kar 4-krat...trikrat z Peugeotom (leta 1987, 1989 ter 1990) ter enkrat s Citroenom (leta 1991)!

Who is Jean Todt

....Lefebvre drove Todt's father's Mini Cooper S in a rally, with Todt as his co-driver.

Bitten by the competition bug Todt was soon a professional co-driver with the NSU company, partnering Guy Chasseuil. By 1969 he was in international rallying in a Ford Capri, alongside Jean-Francois Piot. In 1970 he won the Tour de France with Matra, co-driving Jean-Pierre Beltoise and Patrick Depailler and afterwards was integrated into the Alpine-Renault team, scoring his first major victory as co-driver to Jean-Pierre Nicolas in the 1971 Portuguese Rally. In the years that followed he co-drove some of the top names in the sport, including Rauno Aaltonen, Ove Andersson and Achim Warmbold. He then began a successful relationship with Hannu Mikkola in Fiats and Peugeots and eventually gravitated towards Talbot Sunbeam Lotus, where he partnered Guy Frequelin. In 1981 Talbot won the World Rally Manufacturers' title.

In October 1981 Todt was asked by Jean Boillot, the head of Automobiles Peugeot, if he would set up a new competition department for PSA Peugeot-Citroen. The result was Peugeot Talbot Sport. Todt axed the Talbot F1 program and set about creating a program to take Peugeot to victory in the World Rally Championship with the now-legendary Peugeot 205 Turbo 16. The car won its first rally in the hands of Ari Vatanen on the 1000 Lakes in Finland in 1984 and dominated the World Rally Championship in 1985 and 1986 with 16 wins and two WRC titles. The success earned Todt the title of Chevalier de la Legion d'Honneur, the French equivalent of a knighthood.---

Mene pa preseneča, da nikakor ne morem pogruntat, kaj sploh hočeš povedat. Verjetno si se samo zaplezal/zapletel in se s tem, ko ne nehaš, samo še bolj zapletaš. dovolj OT

The “Dakar 2007”, that most classic of all rallies with its thrilling succession of stages and special trials, was presented today in Paris. It will start from Lisbon on 6th January and close on the 21st in the Senegal capital after covering 8,696 kilometres, 5,100 of them in the form of timed specials. It will cross Portugal, Spain, Morocco, Mauritania, Mali and Senegal.

FIAT PANDA CROSS TO TACKLE THE TOUGHEST OF EVENTS: THE 2007 LISBOA-DAKAR

An extraordinary adventure that will see Fiat in the thick of it with two Panda Cross’s driven by Miki Biasion, teamed with Tiziano Siviero, and by one of the Fiat squad’s official drivers.

Entered in the T2 category, the closest to production vehicles, the two Panda Cross’s are fitted with a 1.3 Multijet turbodiesel combined with a six-speed manual gearbox that delivers about 105 bhp at 4500 rpm and has a peak torque of 17 kgm at 2500 rpm. Apart from their small dimensions, the two cars stand out for their automatically selectable all-wheel drive with viscous joint and locking differential, the system that provides more grip on the terrain thanks to the optimal split of motive force to the wheels. The Fiat Panda Cross is proving to be an extraordinary “explorer”, completely at ease on rough, gruelling terrain. Credit for this also goes to the tried and tested, specifically set suspension layout: in front McPherson independent wheels, at the rear independent wheels with longitudinal tie rods. Not to mention the shock absorbers, adjustable 4 ways at the front and 3 at the rear.

The two cars competing in the Dakar 2007 have been fitted out specifically for this rally: so room has been found inside for accessories like the aluminium platforms to get the vehicle out of sand, two shovels, three spare wheels, water reserves for the crew (minimum 10 litres) and other pieces of equipment useful for the occasion. Among other things, the Fiat expedition to Dakar will include a Fiat Sedici as service back-up and three Iveco trucks to transport spares and mechanics.

Winner of two world rally championships with Lancia and two world Truck titles with Iveco in 1998 and 1999, Miki Biasion will be relying on the great manoeuvrability and personality of the Panda Cross.

It should also not be forgotten that during its development stage the Panda 4x4, from which the Cross version is derived, was tested in every corner of the Earth for sturdiness, character and road performance, especially in road situations and climate conditions that were often at the limit: in the North of the globe it was on the ice-bound rugged tracks of freezing Lapland where the temperature drops to 40 degrees centigrade below; in the South, in the torrid conditions of South Africa where the Atlantic meets up with the Indian Ocean; in the West, on the rugged slopes of the Sierra Nevada, in Spain; and in the East, in the foothills of the majestic, eternal Mount Everest. In all, the Panda 4x4 covered more than one million kilometres before going into production.

Mitsubishi Delica D:5 will serve as Dakar support vehicle

Mitsubishi has announced that its new Delica D:5 minivan will serve as a support vehicle for the automaker's factory Dakar effort, which will feature another new product, the restyled 2-door Pajero, in the starring role. The stylish new Delica -- a Japan-only model, unfortunately -- was revealed by Mitsubishi at the end of last month. The consumer version receives power from its 2.4-liter engine, channeled through an AWD system. The Delica's role in the Dakar rally will undoubtedly help the people mover bolster its modest soft-roading pretensions with its home-market customers.

The actual Dakar Delica will be suitably modified to handle the 8,000 KM trek. Naturally, safety equipment such as a roll cage and proper bucket seats will be fitted, and the van's mechanicals will be fortified to survive the punishment it's likely to face as it bounces across the desert. The standard suspension will be reinforced and see rally-spec shocks and springs added. The same goes for the wheels and tires, obviously, and the van's fuel tank will get added capacity to help minimize the risk of running out of fuel during the rally's extensive driving days.

We're looking forward to seeing how the D:5 looks in full racing livery, a preview of which you see above. If Mitsubishi's confident it can complete the event, that's enough for us. They've been at this for a while now, so they know what they're doing and how to prepare a vehicle for the event.

Naši predstavniki na Dakkarju (sposojeno iz teme o Slovencih na letošnjem Dakkarju, ki je tu http://www.avtomobilizem.com/forum/view ... sc&start=0 )

Na letošnjem Dakkarju bosta sodelovala dva Slovenca v skupini tovornjakov.

Krivic Janez in Mišo Goriup bosta vozila tole zver.

Biasion enters Dakar with a Panda

The Italian, who took 17 WRC victories and back-to-back titles in 1988 and 1989, lines up with rally-raid veteran Bruno Saby for an assault with a difference.

Their Diesel-powered cars are entered by Team Fiat PanDAKAR, and boast 105 BHP, a 160-litre fuel tank in place of the rear seats, tubular roll bars, modified 5-speed gearbox, reinforced clutch, and Michelin tyres normally used on vans.

With a full tank, three extra tyres, driver and co-driver the cars weigh 1,400 kilograms.

"I know it will be hard, very hard," said Biasion. "We'll have moments when we'll all be really stressed. However, there is the enthusiasm of an entire group. I'm certain the little mouse of the dunes won't disappoint the fans."

Talking about how the decision to compete with Fiat Pandas came about, Biasion said: "While talking with some friends in Fiat, it was suggested to make a raid prototype with a tubular chassis and a body similar to some production models, but it was too expensive.

"Then came the idea of using the Panda, with an assistance truck from my friends at Iveco and Pirelli tyres. The operation was supposed to be called 'the giant and the little girl' but it was postponed by a year.

"Then (Fiat Brand Manager Luca) de Meo and (Fiat CEO Sergio) Marchionne showed interest in it and there was the important arrival in Fiat of my old friend Claudio Berro.

"We moved to doubling the challenge: two Pandas in the rally, and in their diesel version no less. We analysed the two versions, gasoline and diesel, and chose the latter for a matter of weight distribution and fuel economy.

"It will be a great way for Gruppo Fiat to attract the affection of drivers.

"(Bruno) Saby, the other driver, after having tried it for the first time in Tunisia said with a big grin: 'It isn't ridiculous at all!' And he is a champion in the world of raids..."
