in matter of fact, there was A LOT of changes in Cooper S specs during 60's. it all started on late 1962 with 'little S' that had 1071 ccm engine while most powerful racing Coopers saw daylight in 1967.
afaik,
1961 BMC introduced Cooper, with 970 ccm engine.
1962 Cooper got 997 ccm and Cooper S with 1071 ccm engine (also known as "little S") was introduced
1964 saw the daylight Cooper S with 1272 ccm engine. In most cases, even the road versions, it was "drilled" to 1289 ccm or bigger. at australia they used even 1380 ccm engines that still were based on same A-Series block, that old 850 ccm had.
1966 Cooper S got dual fuel tanks and some other minor details were changed.
1967 was the year of coopers wining practically all in the rally as well as at the track.
1968 BMC introduced new model (known as Mk. II) that had bigger lights on rear, winchable side windows (instead of sliding a side.), different looking fron grille, simplier bumpers car was bit wider and heavier as well as power output was reduced. this model stayed all way until 1275GT a.k.a. Clubman replaced it. after that, it took quite some time before you saw Mk III Cooper S. (though there was small amount of Cooper ST's made in 1972. )
and now about the Rally version power output during Mk I Cooper S era (1966-67). while I was doing some research work for Mini Cooper ST for NFS4 (
http://rp-design.totalnfs.net/nfs4cars.shtml), I got a chance to talk with owner of Original factory default 1966 Austin Cooper S. (Mk1, Mk 2 were always sold under names of Austin or Morris.) this Cooper had classification for Historic Rally class here in finland, so it's power output cannot be altered with nowadays technology. so, in 1966, Cooper S coming from factory with rally specification, got 1296 ccm engine fed up with FOUR SU Racing Carbs. on dyno run this little devil gave around 100Kw (~136hp). so, this is from front wheels. Still that power comes on pretty high revs (around ~7200 rpm), but still when the car weights less than 670 kg's it truly makes the car fly.
